Nutritional Assessments Q & A

by John Pinto, D.C.

Why is nutrition important to chiropractic care?

The caregivers at Advanced Wellness of Westfield believe that good nutrition is key to overall health and wellness. Through one-on-one nutrition counseling, Dr. Pinto offers personal guidance that will lead you toward a new, healthier way of eating.

The commitment to eat nutritious food results in numerous health benefits. Consuming food that nourishes your body reduces the risk of chronic health conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. A healthy diet makes you feel better and results in more confidence and a positive outlook. You may even lose weight, which decreases the stress on your back, joints, and feet.

With nutrition counseling, Dr. Pinto assesses your current eating style and helps you set achievable goals. He will recommend an eating plan with the types of food, vitamins, and supplements you should take, along with recommendations for a meal schedule.

What happens during a nutritional assessment?

A nutritional assessment provides an in-depth evaluation of all factors related to a patient’s diet, from food and nutrient intake to medical history and lifestyle choices. Once Dr. Pinto collects information on a patient, he develops a personalized care plan based on the patient’s goals, such as weight loss, weight maintenance, or other diet-related goal.

Assessment data falls into 4 categories. These are:

  •         Anthropometrics: measuring of height and weight, and calculation of body mass index
  •         Biochemical: lab values from blood and urine testing, if needed
  •         Clinical: medical history information, including acute and chronic illnesses, food allergies, and current medications
  •         Dietary: food diary, calorie and nutrient intake, usual meal and snack schedule

Dr. Pinto then identifies areas to address. These could include, for example, the need for dietary supplements, changes in food preparation techniques, or portion control.

Is Dr. Pinto certified to perform nutritional assessments?

In addition to being a doctor of chiropractic, Dr. Pinto has specializations in nutrition, and he is certified as a Diplomate of the American Clinical Board of Nutrition (DACBN), a Diplomate of the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition (DCBCN), and a Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN).
